Gifts in Wills and bequests regularly transform the University - be it through providing the support needed to allow our students to succeed, giving a researcher the final boost to make a breakthrough, or expanding the cultural collections that make education possible.
When she died in May of 2012, Elwin 脿 Beckett left the bulk of her estate to the University to advance research into bowel cancer, in honour of her much-loved brother Martin, who died from the disease, in 1986.
More than 10 years on, researchers like Dr Erin Shanahan are edging closer to improved patient outcomes. The 脿 Beckett Fellowship has provided the stability to build a comprehensive research program, in a field not traditionally associated with microbiology.
It鈥檚 an incredibly generous thing to do. This gift will keep on giving, beyond its original scope.
