Unit of study_

ARCH9074: Orthodoxy and Controversy in Heritage Cons.

2027 unit information

This unit introduces students to key controversies, theoretical propositions and practical innovations that have shaped thinking about heritage. We examine the ways in which orthodox ideas and practices have changed over time, and we pay particular attention to the ethical dimensions of the field, the influence of human rights thinking, and debates about authority, inclusion, and responsibility. The unit develops a critical understanding of the principles and protocols that guide heritage practice, including heritage charters, by situating them within their historical, institutional, and cultural contexts. We explore how international organisations, government agencies, professional bodies and communities shape heritage concepts and practices, and consider ongoing tensions between universal principles and cultural specificity. The unit also foregrounds the growing significance of Indigenous cultural heritage, advocacy, and activism in reshaping contemporary heritage conservation.
