Overview

Students develop early skills in professional practice through lectures, tutorials, and mentorship by a Year 4 student who will guide in providing assessment and intervention in the on campus clinic. Students will build on observation and reflective skills, and the ability to seek and use evidence, to facilitate their learning and that of the child and family they are working with. They will develop early report writing, and case presentation skills, and gain an understanding of government legislation and compliance to policies and procedures of the on-campus clinic. Knowledge in culturally safe and responsive practice with First Nations and diverse populations is further developed. The importance of professional relationships, problem-solving strategies, and ethical practice working with children and their families will be highlighted as students transfer knowledge and theory into practice.

Early feedback task

This unit includes an early feedback task, designed to give you feedback prior to the census date for this unit. Details are provided in the site and your result will be recorded in your Marks page. It is important that you actively engage with this task so that the University can support you to be successful in this unit.

Assessment summary

Compulsory Attendance at orientation and all client/service appointments:听Attendance at all orientation activities and all client/service appointments is required to support student learning on placement.听
Compulsory attendance at all practice supervision meetings:听Attendance at all practice supervision meetings (tutorials) is required to support student learning on placement.听
End of semester paperwork:听Students must complete relevant online forms associated with WHS and practice placements in SONIA and canvas including professional practice hours.听
Professional Practice competency checklist - Mid:听 This provides students with formative feedback听at mid placement reflecting early competencies in professional practice. 听Students who do not pass听the assessment (minimum 5/12) will be offered remediation support.
Professional Practice competency checklist - End:听听Students must receive the required marks (12/12) in the professional practice competency checklist, at end placement reflecting early competencies in professional practice. 听For students who have not passed the checklist, they will fail the entire unit and receive remediation support.
Reflective practice assignment:听Students write a 500 word reflection on their experiences in Introductory Practice II in relation to the professional standards.
Interactive Oral Assessment:听Students will complete an in person IOA based on a given case. IOAs will be conducted in groups of 4 but marked individually.听Students who do not pass听the IOA are permitted one resit.

Restricted use of AI is permitted in non-secure assessments. However students must maintain client confidentiality at all times and specific client details must not be used in AI tools in any form. This will be considered a serious breach of ethics and professionalism.

Detailed information for each assessment can be found on Canvas. Students are required to complete and pass all hurdle tasks to pass the unit of study. Failure to complete and/or pass a hurdle assessment item will result in students being awarded a Fail grade, regardless of their cumulative marks in the unit of study.

Assessment criteria

As a general guide, a high distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

HD	High distinction	85 - 100	Awarded when you demonstrate the learning outcomes for the unit at an exceptional standard.
DI	Distinction	75 - 84	Awarded when you demonstrate the learning outcomes for the unit at a very high standard.
CR	Credit	65 - 74	Awarded when you demonstrate the learning outcomes for the unit at a good standard.
PS	Pass	50 - 64	Awarded when you demonstrate the learning outcomes for the unit at an acceptable standard.

Use of generative artificial intelligence (AI)

You can use generative AI tools for open assessments. Restrictions on AI use apply to secure, supervised assessments used to confirm if students have met specific learning outcomes.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Learning support

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a听simple extension.鈥� The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can鈥檛 complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for听special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

Attendance:听Clinical placements are scheduled from March - November. This unit of study consists of a 1 hour lecture a week and placement at the SPEECH Clinic. Days of attendance at the clinic will be allocated to the student by the Practice Educator and advanced mentor. Students are expected to undertake all components of this unit of study to their completion and in their entirety.

Students are supported with information in orientation/ briefing sessions during the year prior to their attendance at the placement and regular meetings during the placement. This is supplemented by the Introductory Practice 1 and 2. All briefing sessions and meetings are compulsory.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

Learning outcomes

Learning outcomes are what students know, understand and are able to do on completion of a unit of study. They are aligned with the University's graduate qualities and are assessed as part of the curriculum.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

This unit of study may require you to attend a teaching activity timetabled in teaching venues installed with the University鈥檚 Clinical Recording and Observation System (CROS) in the Susan Wakil Health Building. Work, health and safety

Students must complete a work health and safety checklist with their clinical educator during the first week of placement.听

Students must be fully verified through NSW Health and have a valid police check and WWCC.

The听听directs that a healthcare worker 鈥� including students,听volunteers and those undertaking administrative duties - must not do work as a healthcare worker unless they have received:听

at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine before 30 September 2021, and听
at least two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine听 before 30 November 2021

This is a requirement for health care workers within NSW Health and private health facilities, or others so directed by the Chief Health Officer, and the vaccine must be one that is approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).
