DESC9152: Practice of Lighting Design

2027 unit information

This unit immerses students in the practice of contemporary lighting design through a project-led, industry-relevant brief. It emphasises collaborative, interdisciplinary workflows and the translation of design ideas into resolved, communicable outcomes. Led by an experienced practitioner, students work on real-world lighting design challenges that reflects the complexity of professional practice. The studio simulates a collaborative design environment, requiring engagement with site, context, users, and stakeholders, while balancing experiential, technical, and environmental considerations. Students develop skills in interpreting design briefs, conducting site investigations, identifying opportunities and constraints, and generating coherent design strategies. Strong focus is placed on iterative development from concept to detailed resolution supported by discussion, critique, and feedback. The unit introduces industry-standard approaches to documenting and communicating lighting design, including the preparation and refinement of lighting plans in line with best practice. Students also develop their ability to present ideas clearly and persuasively to a client audience, integrating narrative, visual, and technical material.
