Unit of study_

DESC9198: Subjective Analysis in Lighting Design

2027 unit information

This unit explores the role of perception, judgement, and critical evaluation in lighting design. It focuses on the experiential and aesthetic dimensions of light, addressing how visual perception, materiality, form, and spatial context influence the way illuminated environments are understood and evaluated. Students engage with concepts of visual perception, the qualities of light, and human sensitivity across diverse conditions. Emphasis is placed on developing a balanced approach that combines analytical rigour with subjective interpretation, enabling students to articulate and justify design decisions beyond purely technical metrics. Through critical discussion, the unit encourages students to assess and refine lighting proposals in relation to spatial form, objects, and environments that demand a high degree of visual and experiential sensitivity. It builds on and supports cross-disciplinary perspectives and methods of inquiry.
