This unit introduces students to the latest, exciting advances in understanding how children learn and develop. Students are introduced to the notion of a dynamic, predictive, emotional, embodied, and physically and socio-culturally embedded brain. They consider the key neural mechanisms of learning and memory, metacognition, emotion and values, knowledge development, moral development, and creativity insofar as they are relevant to classroom teaching. They critically evaluate the putative implications of neuroscience, educational research, policy, and practice, and critically reflect on the neuroscientific findings, enabling them to distinguish neuroscientific fact from fiction.
