This unit of study explores theatre historian Joseph Roach's influential concept of the deep eighteenth century, a way of encapsulating how ideas, practices, and structures from the eighteenth century continue to shape our present. We will evaluate this idea by focusing on the novel, which emerged as a distinct genre in the eighteenth century. We will read a range of eighteenth-century novels that grapple with ideas of personhood, interiority, race, and affective relations. We will pair this reading with contemporary novels that explicitly revisit, rework, or resist ideas, events, and texts from the earlier period. To what extent are we shaped by eighteenth-century fictions?
