This unit focuses on how creative writing connects with major scholarly and critical debates in literary and cultural theory. You will examine critical and creative works, as well as the work of writers whose work is both creative and theoretical. You will study a variety of topics, with attention to how creative and critical work is co-constitutive, and you will experiment with different forms of writing throughout the semester.

Learning outcomes

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

LO1. develop a greater understanding of the relationship between literary theory and practice, and the interrelationship of reading and writing
LO2. learn how to position student's own critical and creative writing within contemporary practices and debate
LO3. understand more about the historical context of literary theory and practice and the relationship between intratextual, intertextual and extra textual dimensions
LO4. develop an expanded sense of the literary economy: the processes by which texts enter into circulation and their critical reception
