This unit provides students with an overview of the physiology and psychology underpinning performance and assessment in competitive sport. A key aim is to stimulate students to think critically about the determinants of human performance, how these can be assessed, and how assessment outcomes inform the development of sport-specific capabilities. To address these aims, physiological and psychological approaches are used to explore theoretical concepts and apply them in practical settings across a range of sport contexts. In the physiology component, there is an initial focus on identifying physiological indices that contribute to performance, including aerobic and anaerobic power and capacity, muscular strength, and maximal power output. Students then explore methods used to assess these indices for applied purposes, including athlete evaluation, prescribing training thresholds, and monitoring training and competition performance. In the psychology component, cognitive, behavioural, and social determinants of performance in assessment and competition contexts are examined and applied. Learning activities include didactic lectures delivered by unit coordinators and guest lecturers, alongside practical classes designed to develop experience with physiological and psychological assessments in applied sport science settings.
