GOVT2117: Introduction to Comparative Politics

2027 unit information

This unit introduces students to the political science sub-discipline of comparative politics. Why are some countries rich and others poor? Why are some countries democracies and other dictatorships? Why do some ethnically diverse societies descend into violence while others remain peaceful? While exploring these life-and-death questions, students will learn about key concepts such as the state, regime, institutional design, and civil society. These concepts will be brought to life through a range of international case studies.
