This unit of study provides students with an opportunity to develop an up-to-date critical understanding of the role of physical activity for the health of the population as well as the key principles that underpin population level physical activity interventions. Students will examine participation patterns and barriers to being physically active at a population level as well as explore the role of physical activity in the prevention and management of physical and mental chronic disease. The unit is largely multi-disciplinary and covers key factors that allow people to live happier and longer lives. Taking a lifespan approach, it promotes an understanding of direct and indirect implications of physical inactivity at each life stage. Particular emphasis is given to physical activity as a behaviour that is not merely a lifestyle 'choice' as is often portrayed, but rather the outcome of a complex web of societal, cultural, economic, political, and individual circumstances that lead to the formation of personal habits across the lifespan. The unit is largely interactive and will encourage students to discuss, debate, and critically evaluate the evidence. It provides the opportunity to participate in a project that has potential relevance to future employment. Students will also learn key research skills by undertaking a systematic literature review, equipping them with a solid foundation of evidence-based practice and policy development.
