Sports Law? Sport and the Law? The Law of Sport? Or, all of the above? Sport is one of the world's largest and most influential industries, generating billions of dollars in commercial activity while shaping communities, culture, public policy and international relations. Behind every sporting organisation, professional league, major event, athlete, sponsor and broadcaster lies a complex legal and regulatory framework. This course is a commercial law subject which examines the legal, commercial and governance foundations of the modern sports industry and draws upon principles from contract law, corporations law, administrative law, employment law, intellectual property, competition law, dispute resolution, criminal law and international law. Sports Law explores how established legal doctrines apply within the unique context of sport, while also examining the specialised body of sports law that continues to develop in Australia and internationally. The course adopts a practical, industry-focused approach to understanding how sport is governed, regulated, commercialised and operated. Students will examine the legal issues affecting athletes, clubs, leagues, governing bodies, governments, sponsors, broadcasters, venues, event organisers, investors, and integrity regulators through contemporary Australian and international case studies. More than a study of legal doctrine, this course is designed to develop the skills required of lawyers advising the sports industry. Students will learn how legal principles are applied in practice to establish and govern sporting organisations, negotiate commercial arrangements, protect intellectual property, manage disputes and integrity risks, deliver major sporting events, and advise clients operating in one of the world's most dynamic and rapidly evolving industries.
