Overview

From sophisticated military systems to mundane everyday objects, technologies are an inextricable part of modern societies. They shape our lives and how we produce new knowledge, and they raise big questions: does technology drive history? How do changing technological environments change human experience? What role can or should techno-science play in addressing social equality and environmental justice? This unit explores technology as a product of the human imagination, but also as a tool for imagination. We examine the roles of technology in scientific knowledge creation, and we investigate how literary or artistic imagination inspires material technologies. Connecting approaches from science, engineering, and the humanities, our discussions develop perspectives for you to think critically and creatively about the big questions raised by techno-science in today鈥檚 societies.

Assessment summary

Written test: answer essay questions on material from Weeks 1-6.

Interactive oral: demonstrate understanding of course material in conversation.听

Essay: integrate insights from lectures, readings, and discussions in a digital-visual format. Topics will be developed in weekly workshops.听

Contribution: active, engaged participation informed by assigned readings in weekly tutorial discussions and workshops.

The work reflects the ability to develop a sound argument and express it clearly in writing or oral presentation and shows excellent knowledge of the subject area as well as independent thought.
Distinction	75 - 84	Awarded for work that meets the main assessment requirements, and demonstrates clear understanding of the course concepts, and good proficiency in applying appropriate methodology and theoretical concepts to the topic. The work reflects the ability to develop a sound argument and express it clearly in writing or oral presentation.
Credit	65 - 74	Awarded for work meets the main assessment requirements, and demonstrates solid understanding of the course concepts, and the ability to apply appropriate methodology and theoretical concepts to the topic.
Pass 听听听听	50 - 64 听听	Awarded for work that meets the main requirement as outlined in the assessment description and demonstrates basic understanding of the course material and concepts and the ability to apply appropriate methodology and theoretical concepts to some degree to the topic.
Fail	0-49	For work that does not meet the learning outcomes of the unit to a satisfactory standard.

You can use generative AI tools for open assessments. Restrictions on AI use apply to secure, supervised assessments used to confirm if students have met specific learning outcomes.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Learning support

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a听simple extension.鈥� The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can鈥檛 complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for听special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.
