This unit of study explores sociological understandings of childhood and youth. Drawing on traditional and contemporary thought, it examines how childhood and youth are constructed in relation to adulthood; how children and young people鈥檚 experiences differ along the lines of class, gender, race, ability etc.; how social policies influence trajectories; and how children and young people build identity and agency in a rapidly changing world. Topics covered may include: the nature/nurture debate, children as authorities on their own experiences, social generations, sub-cultures and crazes, the commercialisation of childhood, juvenile justice, and youth mental health.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

LO4. demonstrate creative, critical and independent thinking and communication skills.
