Notions of the unusual and abnormal - whether seen as good or bad, 'deviance' or 'difference' - are fundamentalaspectsof societies. This unit explores how 'deviance' is socially constructed, changes over time, and the roles it plays in social structure and change. We work through a variety of theories from the sociology of deviance. We then explore a range of case studies, including: 'moralpanics' over youth cultures, migration and child abuse; whether we can rebel; how our bodies are a key medium through which social norms are reproduced or changed; and how obesity, anorexia and our understandings of mental illness are shaped by notions of 'deviance'.
