This unit examines population health and sustainability through a political economy lens, with justice and equity as the key thread. Students engage critically with the dominant frameworks of the field, including planetary health and the Sustainable Development Goals, considering their analytical contributions, political functions, and limitations. The unit foregrounds structural determinants of health 鈥 including economic systems, colonial histories, corporate power, and gendered inequalities 鈥 and centres First Nations and relational frameworks as foundational analytical lenses. Topics include the social and structural production of health inequities; environmental health, One Health, and climate justice; global health institutions and governance; commercial determinants of health and corporate power; population movement, ageing, and migration; health equity impact assessment; the sustainability of healthcare systems themselves; welfare states and the care economy; and the political economy of global malnutrition. Students develop the capacity to interrogate evidence and policy claims critically, to apply justice frameworks to concrete health鈥搒ustainability problems, and to articulate reasoned positions on just futures for health.
