This unit of study provides a rigorous and critical understanding of the institutions, actors and processes underpinning government policies relating to work, employment relations and labour markets in the Australian institutional landscape. It examines how public policy shapes responsible and sustainable human resource management and employment relations in complex and dynamic social, economic and regulatory environments. The unit focuses on critically assessing the role and effectiveness of government policies in responding to key societal and workplace challenges and analysing the implications for workers, employers and human resource management and employment relations practitioners. Emphasis is placed on evidence-based, historically informed and interdisciplinary approaches to policy analysis. Key topics include the roles of government, trade unions and employer associations in policy-making relating to wage-setting and collective bargaining, job security, gender, equality and diversity, work and family, flexible work arrangements, productivity, skills and immigration, underpayment, the platform economy and the impacts of technological change at work. Through critical and reflective learning, the unit develops students鈥 analytical capabilities to understand and evaluate how legislative, economic and social developments shape human resource management and employment relations in contemporary contexts.
