Student's scoop on the 2019 Sydney Writers' Festival

22 March 2019
The theme is inspired by Buffy the Vampire Slayer
After the launch of the 2019 Sydney Writers' Festival, Media and Communications students Abbey Lenton and Haydn Hickson share their take on our people in the program, their must-see events and this year鈥檚 theme: 鈥楲ie to Me鈥.

Haydn: How good was the launch of the last week? It was my second time but I know it was your first, how did you find it?

Abbey: The food was incredible, the lighting was incredible - it was a super impressive start to an excellent festival.

Haydn: I鈥檓 just so glad it鈥檚 at Carriageworks again this year. The festival could NOT be more convenient for us.

Abbey: For sure, I can鈥檛 wait to duck off to as many talks as I can after class.

贬补测诲苍:听Can we talk about the theme for a second? Last year we had 鈥楶ower鈥 and this year it鈥檚 鈥楲ie to Me鈥!

Abbey: I think 鈥楲ie To Me鈥 is such a great theme! It鈥檚 kind of dark and twisted. I鈥檓 really intrigued to see the way the festival approaches it, especially the bracing, political topics.

Haydn: Oh for sure! I鈥檓 still shocked that the theme ! Festival Director Michaela McGuire is a literal genius. All her picks were spot on. I genuinely can鈥檛 think of any other author I would have added to the lineup.

Abbey: There鈥檚 such an interesting mix between politics, crime, love鈥 those stories that make your jaw drop and those stories that make your heart warm.

Haydn: Who are you most keen to see?

Abbey: I鈥檇 have to say I鈥檓 most excited for talk, author of 鈥 The New Yorker short story about ghosting and consent that went viral last year - totally restored my faith in internet fiction. How about you?

Shout out to Sydney PhD students Evelyn Araluen, Ms Saffaa, and Ferdous Bahar who are speaking at the festival this year.

Haydn:听I鈥檓 so excited for听.听Adaptation听is one of my favourite movies of all time, so to see the author Meryl Streep portrayed is going to be a cathartic experience to say the least.

But听I鈥檓 also a little bit chuffed to see just how many USYD researchers are in the lineup. It鈥檚 making me realise the academics we encounter on campus and are taught by everyday are just as respected off campus. I feel super lucky.

Abbey: Me too! There鈥檚 something crazy like听听in the lineup. Some pretty big USYD hitters in there -听, , Dr听鈥

贬补测诲苍:听Oh for sure, I am beyond excited to see 鈥.鈥 Dr Karl is the best.

Also, I think it鈥檚 so great that there鈥檚 going to be events we don鈥檛 even need to leave campus for! Like the big one with Man Book finalist Rachel Kushner. Did you see she鈥檚 going to be on campus for a听听in the new Social Sciences building?

Abbey:听OMG yes! She is so inspiring and has such an extraordinary story to tell. I am 100% picking up her last book听The Mars Room听before hitting her talk.

Haydn:听It鈥檚 so good that USYD students have a discount code too!

Abbey: I鈥檓 entering the code as we speak鈥

Haydn:听Ha ha see you at Carriageworks!
