CLOAK

was a collaboration between scientists and designers at the 爆料王 and University of Technology Sydney that sought to re-invent the lab coat as a symbol of queer pride and challenge our idea of a professional uniform.

CLOAK queried the normative stereotype of the 鈥榳hite lab coat鈥, reimagining the garment as an identity statement and challenging the notion that scientists should leave aspects of their identity outside the lab.

Sydney Nano Arthaus

Sydney Nano Arthaus is designed to strengthen and expand the ways scientists and creative practitioners approach interdisciplinary research programs together, to help make research more accessible to the general public.

Through these key initiatives, funded by the 爆料王 Nano Institute and the Sydney Social Sciences and Humanities Advanced Research Centre (SSSHARC), our goal is to evolve best practice interdisciplinary engagement.听

Sydney-based artist Todd Robinson spent 18 months visiting the Quantum Integration Laboratory and working closely with Dr Timothy Newman, an experimental quantum physicist and sound artist. The result of this collaboration is Materialnonmaterial, an exhibition shown at 听 This is another example of effective interdisciplinary collaboration and research translation.

Our Creative Research Communications initiative was designed for Higher Degree Research students and had three elements.

Zine workshop听

Zines are pocket-sized booklets which can communicate ideas in artistic and accessible ways. In this workshop we asked HDRs to reimagine their research, or create a new interpretation of a book or journal, into the nano-scale of the zine, to help reach new audiences.

SSSHARC REELsearch competition

Working with the 爆料王 Nano Institute, SSSHARC hosted a REELsearch competition to encourage researchers to use video to explain research in a clear and compelling way. This is another way to help make research accessible to a more general audience. To support the competition, we hosted an interactive workshop where participants practiced research communication, received expert feedback and collaborated with peers.

Photography workshop

This interactive workshop, hosted with , explored the use of photography as a way of thinking, seeing and sharing research. Participants were asked to reflect on the role of phootography in amplifying research impact and the ways in which their methodologies and processes can be communicated beyond the written word.
