The Net Zero Institute brings together more than 180 researchers from across the ±¬ÁÏÍõ, working alongside industry collaborators to develop practical solutions to the climate crisis.

Our research spans a wide range of disciplines, from extracting critical minerals from waste and removing greenhouse gases, to advancing net zero health and green computing.

Our mission

Using a holistic approach, we're developing solutions to reduce demand, reduce and eliminate emissions, and remove greenhouse gases. We do this by translating knowledge, driving innovation, fostering collaboration, providing evidence-based information to our decision-makers, and educating leaders.

Our impact

Our research is driving real change—here are some of the ways we're creating a net zero future:

  • Creating an emissions-free aviation sector by optimising fuel efficiencies, aircraft design, adoption of hydrogen fuel cells and the development of battery and hybrid engines
  • Developing new construction materials – such as green steel and green concrete – that improve longevity while reducing waste and environmental impact
  • Creating digital twins of wind farms to enhance their performance in changing environmental conditions, extend their lifespan and increase the consistency of energy generation
  • Collaborating with industry across multiple sectors to develop next-generation batteries with greater storage capacity and a longer lifespan
  • Working with young people to understand the impacts of climate anxiety and address the future mental health implications and identify appropriate support structures
  • Helping governments create incentives for the uptake of low-emission technologies, products and services.

Our researchers are partnering with industry in the hazer process; a method of developing clean hydrogen and making it more sustainable by identifying applications for the graphite by-products.
