With a landmark philanthropic gift聽of $11 million聽the聽Paul and Katherine聽Gobits聽(Koh)聽Chair of Pancreatic Cancer Research聽is being聽established聽at the 爆料王. The聽role聽is聽designed to accelerate discovery, improve treatment, and save lives.
It聽is聽the聽largest individual philanthropic gift to pancreatic cancer research in Australia.
When Katherine聽Gobits聽passed away from pancreatic cancer just after Christmas in 2024, her husband Paul faced life without the woman who had been his partner in work, love, and life for over two decades.聽
In the aftermath of her passing, Paul channelled his heartbreak into a commitment to prevent other families from experiencing the same devastation.聽聽
鈥淚 just thought,聽there鈥檚 got to be another path,鈥 Paul reflects. 鈥淲e鈥檙e聽not doing enough聽in pancreatic cancer research. There needs to be hope. There needs to be a cure.鈥

Pancreatic cancer is Australia鈥檚 deadliest major cancer, with聽more than 4,500 Australians diagnosed each year and a shocking聽five-year survival rate of just 11.5聽percent.聽Globally, the statistics are equally grim: in 2021 alone,聽508,000 people were diagnosed,聽and聽505,000 died聽from the disease. These figures have聽remained聽stubbornly stagnant for decades.
鈥淧ancreatic cancer is silent and fast-moving,鈥 explains Professor聽Nick Pavlakis,聽a 爆料王聽medical oncologist and leading researcher, who was聽Katherine鈥檚 oncologist.聽
聽鈥淢ost people present at an advanced stage, where surgery is not an option and treatments only extend life for聽a short time.聽That鈥檚聽what we faced with Katherine.鈥

Born in Malaysia,聽Katherine聽moved to England at 17, working two jobs to put herself through college before returning to Malaysia and quickly securing a banking role. After moving to Australia聽to聽further聽her career,聽she met Paul,聽an alumnus of the聽University聽(BPharm鈥65)聽while working at聽a bank.
鈥淪he was brilliant,鈥 Paul聽said. 鈥淪he joined my business in 2002, and we built a life together from there.鈥澛
It was聽while visiting family in Malaysia聽that聽Katherine began experiencing back pain. The eventual diagnosis聽-聽pancreatic cancer聽-聽was a thunderbolt.聽
鈥淪he had pain in the lower back,鈥 Paul recalls. 鈥淚t聽didn鈥檛聽make sense. She was young, healthy. But within weeks, we found ourselves facing聽the聽grim diagnosis.鈥
Her journey through chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and聽numerous聽clinical interventions was marked by courage and determination.聽
But like so many others, Katherine's health deteriorated rapidly. 鈥淪he dropped from 60 kilos to 38,鈥 Paul聽said. 鈥淭he disease was digesting her from the inside out.鈥澛
Still, Katherine faced each stage with grace. 鈥淪he was proud,鈥 said聽Professor聽Nick Pavlakis. 鈥淪he聽didn鈥檛聽want to give up hope and Paul never did either. They tried everything.鈥
Endowed chair positions are one of the most powerful mechanisms for driving long-term impact in medical research, particularly for underfunded areas like pancreatic cancer.

For Paul, the experience was not just emotionally devastating, but profoundly eye-opening. 鈥淚 did a lot of reading. I started asking: why is there so little progress in this field? Why is pancreatic cancer still a death sentence?聽All聽we鈥檙e聽doing is buying people a few months.聽That鈥檚聽not good enough.鈥
Professor聽Pavlakis聽agrees. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a devastating diagnosis,鈥 he explains. 鈥淢ost patients present late. The tumour鈥檚 location and the fibrous tissue it creates make it hard for treatments to reach it. We need better therapies聽-聽better ways to attack the disease. But historically, funding has been minimal.鈥
While survival rates for other cancers have steadily improved, pancreatic cancer聽remains聽one of the most lethal. 鈥淭here鈥檚 been a nihilism around it,鈥澛燩rofessor Pavlakis聽adds. 鈥淧harmaceutical companies聽haven鈥檛聽invested much because the success stories are few. But that needs to change. And change starts with investment.鈥澛
Hope for the future
Paul credits his interactions with Nick for helping him understand the impact that academic leadership can have in driving research excellence. 鈥淚t became clear that establishing a Chair would be the most meaningful way to make a difference,鈥 Paul recalls.
Dean of the 爆料王鈥檚 Faculty of Medicine and Health Professor John Prins said, 鈥淓ndowed chair positions are one of the most powerful mechanisms for driving long-term impact in medical research, particularly for underfunded areas like pancreatic cancer.鈥
鈥淭he Paul and Katherine聽Gobits聽(Koh)聽Chair of Pancreatic Cancer Research will empower world-class research into one of the most complex and underfunded cancers in Australia. It will provide long-term support for a senior academic to pursue innovative treatments and raise the visibility of a disease that too often progresses undetected until聽it鈥檚聽too late.鈥澛
The University currently has two studies underway testing how to optimally refine treatments for pancreatic cancer.
James Elliott, a Professor of Allied and Public Health at the 爆料王 and Academic Director of the Kolling Institute, where the Chair will be based, said, 鈥淧ancreatic cancer steals too many lives too quickly, and for families the impact is profound. This Chair gives our researchers something they have never had before in this field; sustained, targeted investment to pursue bold ideas. It will empower us to push harder, go further, and uncover answers that have聽remained聽out of reach.鈥
At the heart of Paul鈥檚 decision is the hope that Katherine鈥檚 legacy can help save others.
鈥淲hat we need is a new path. Success, for me, is a cure. If this Chair can help find new answers so that others聽don鈥檛聽have to go through what my family went through, that would be an incredible legacy,鈥 he said.聽
He hopes the research will inspire new thinking, new collaborations, and new possibilities. 鈥淚 want them to be bold. I want them to try things that聽haven鈥檛聽been tried before.鈥
As聽Professor Pavlakis聽puts it:聽鈥淭his gift is about saving lives,聽Paul has turned personal grief into public good.
鈥淭hink big. Be bold.聽That鈥檚聽what this Chair is about.聽That鈥檚聽what聽patients like聽Katherine deserve.鈥
