罢丑别听聽has聽recognised聽two outstanding 爆料王 researchers in its annual honorific awards.聽

Academy聽President聽Professor Chennupati Jagadish AC聽said the聽23聽awards聽announced today聽recognise聽scientists whose work delivers tangible benefits to society.

鈥淓ach of the researchers聽recognised聽represents聽the very best of Australian聽science, through the depth,聽rigour聽and impact聽of their work,鈥 he said.

鈥淔rom fundamental research to applied science, they improve lives, protect our聽environment, and help secure a better future for all Australians.鈥澛

鈥淭hese awards celebrate the University鈥檚 leading work in bone regeneration and harnessing the practical potential of peptides and proteins,鈥 said 爆料王 Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Mike Ryan. 鈥淭hey recognise the tenacity of researchers whose work is often years in the pipeline before its benefit to society is realised.鈥澛犅

Le F猫vre Medal

Associate Professor Yu Heng Lau, School of Chemistry

罢丑别听Le F猫vre Medal聽for research in聽chemistry聽recognises聽outstanding basic research in chemistry by聽early career postdoctoral聽researchers.聽

This year鈥檚 recipient,聽聽leads the聽University鈥檚聽Laboratory of Chemical and Synthetic Biology聽in the聽School of Chemistry.聽His research team聽in the聽Faculty of Science聽combines organic chemistry and synthetic biology to control the architecture of natural proteins and peptides to聽enable the creation of聽new medicines and catalysts.

Peptides and proteins are naturally occurring molecules聽governing聽the most聽important processes in life, from DNA replication in cells to photosynthesis聽in聽plants. As a chemical biologist, Associate Professor Lau has discovered聽how to manipulate these molecules using synthetic聽techniques. This process聽unlocks聽their potential for treating disease and improving聽sustainability.聽

Associate Professor Lau鈥檚 team has developed the first peptide-based therapeutic聽candidates for treating childhood bone cancers by targeting a novel pathway聽known as the Alternative Lengthening of Telomeres (ALT).聽It聽has also聽made fundamental discoveries on the structure and assembly of cage-forming聽proteins known as聽encapsulins, now being developed as tools for聽improving photosynthesis in聽crops.聽

Suzanne Cory Medal

Professor Hala聽Zreiqat,聽School of Biomedical Engineering

The Suzanne Cory Medal聽recognises聽outstanding research in biological sciences. It is a career award open to anyone in that field.聽

鈥檚聽research focuses on developing new generations of聽synthetic biomaterials capable of repairing and regenerating large, load-bearing聽bone defects, with the potential to transform treatment聽of聽skeletal damage caused聽by trauma,聽cancer聽and ageing.聽Her research team聽at聽the聽School of Biomedical Engineering聽has pioneered 3D-printed, patient-specific ceramic implants designed to match the anatomy of an individual patient. Her research is also advancing new strategies to improve healing in ageing and other challenging biological environments, where regeneration is often compromised.聽

鈥淏y integrating advanced chemistry, materials science and bioengineering, my team聽has developed ceramic biomaterials designed not only to match the strength of聽bone, but also to stimulate regeneration, resist infection and support聽personalised聽treatment.,鈥 she said.聽聽

The Suzanne Cory Medal is the latest in聽a long list聽of accolades 笔谤辞蹿别蝉蝉辞谤听窜谤别颈辩补迟聽has received聽across her career.聽She was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (2019) for significant service to biomedical engineering and science聽and in 2018 was named聽NSW鈥檚 Woman of the Year.聽She is聽elected聽to multiple international and Australian academies, including聽Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences, the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering, and the聽Royal Society of New South Wales. Internationally, she is a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and the聽was the first female fellow at the聽International College of聽Orthopaedic聽Research.
