The听Snow Medical Research Foundation听(Snow Medical)听has announced a听new听$24 million investment in three outstanding Australian biomedical researchers through its prestigious Snow Fellowships.

The fellowships will support听听from the 爆料王,听Dr Deborah Burnett from听UNSW,听and听Dr Ira听Deveson听from the Garvan Institute of Medical Research.

These听Fellows will tackle major global health challenges spanning autoimmune disease, neurological disorders, and genetic disease. Their work addresses conditions that disproportionately affect vulnerable and underserved populations, including First Nations communities, while advancing precision medicine and translational care. Collectively, their research aims to deliver safer vaccines, better diagnostics, and more听equitable听genomic and neurological healthcare.

The investment further strengthens New South Wales as a global hub for biomedical research, bringing Snow Medical鈥檚 total investment in the state to $128 million, with $89.5 million committed in the past year alone.

Each Snow Medical Fellowship provides $8 million over eight years, enabling exceptional scientists听to pursue ambitious long-term research programs, build world-class teams and tackle complex scientific challenges.

Chair of Snow Medical Research Foundation, Tom Snow, said the fellowships reflect the Snow family鈥檚 commitment to backing bold scientific ideas and supporting听outstanding young researchers and clinicians.听

鈥淥ur family believes some of the most important breakthroughs in science happen when talented researchers are given the confidence to pursue听ambitious听ideas over the long term,鈥 Mr Snow said.

鈥淭hese fellowships are designed to remove some of the constraints researchers often face, giving them the freedom, time and resources to take risks and explore ambitious questions that could fundamentally change how we understand and treat disease.鈥澨

鈥淲e are tremendously听proud to support this high-calibre听next generation of Australian scientific leaders听and their teams听and help build an environment where world-class research can thrive.鈥

鈥淕reat听science听requires courage,听curiosity听and persistence. By providing long-term support听and听also听investing in the development of our Fellows听and their teams, we鈥檙e helping create the conditions where truly innovative听research can flourish.鈥

The Fellowship enables their life-changing research on autoimmune neurology to be fast-tracked to benefit countless lives in Australia and beyond.

爆料王 Snow Fellow

Associate Professor Sudarshini Ramanathan is a neurologist and clinician scientist whose work focuses on autoimmune neurological disorders. Her research has helped听identify听new neurological syndromes and improve diagnostic tools and treatments for patients with autoimmune diseases affecting the brain, spinal cord, muscles and nerves. Associate Professor Ramanathan鈥檚 work aims to reverse disabilities in these patients听through the use of听targeted therapies.

"The Snow Fellowship will enable our team to translate laboratory discoveries in autoimmune neurology into improved diagnostics and treatments, positioning Australia as a global leader in this rapidly evolving field. This fellowship听provides听an extraordinary opportunity to accelerate research that can transform the lives of people affected by devastating neurological diseases worldwide,鈥 Associate Professor Ramanathan said.

Vice-Chancellor and President of the 爆料王,听Professor Mark Scott said:听

鈥淚 congratulate Associate Professor Ramanathan and her team on this听important听recognition听of their outstanding research.听The Fellowship听enables their听life-changing research听on autoimmune neurology听to be fast-tracked to听benefit听countless lives in Australia and听beyond.听听

鈥淚 applaud the Snow Family and Snow Medical's long鈥憈erm investment in strengthening Australia鈥檚 biomedical research capability."

Professor Ramanathan is the University鈥檚 second Snow Fellow,听joining Professor Arnold Ju, in the Faculty of Engineering,听who researches听development of听a micro-device that monitors and alerts people at risk of a heart attack or stroke.听

The other Snow Fellowship Recipients are:听

Dr Deborah Burnett 鈥撎齍NSW

Dr Deborah Burnett is an immunology researcher working to improve vaccine effectiveness against infections that can trigger autoimmune disease.

鈥淭he Snow Fellowship听will enable my team to develop new approaches to safer, more effective vaccines and therapies for infections that can trigger听unintended听autoimmune diseases, helping better protect vulnerable communities,鈥 Dr Burnett said.

Dr Ira听Deveson听鈥 Garvan Institute of Medical Research

Dr Ira听Deveson听is a genomics researcher whose work focuses on developing and applying advanced genomic sequencing technologies to better understand human genetic diversity and improve diagnosis and treatment of inherited disease.听His听program听is听helping听unravel the genetic diversity of Australia鈥檚 Indigenous populations听to ensure equity in genomic medicine.

鈥淚鈥檓听thrilled and humbled to be awarded a Snow Fellowship. It is a wonderful recognition for my team and will allow us to expand our research to a major national program, partnering with Indigenous communities around the country to build听equitable听genomics resources. This fellowship is a true gamechanger that will accelerate the delivery of genomic medicine,鈥澨鼶r听Deveson听said.
