Hot winter weather driving "unexpected" mental health phenomenon

Higher temperatures in winter are leading to increased hospital admissions for mental health disorders among children and young people, and are expected to increase with climate change.

A major new analysis of聽around聽720,000 hospital presentations of people aged 0鈥24 in NSW has found that聽hotter聽than聽normal聽winter days are linked to a significant rise in acute聽mental聽health聽disorders, with further scenario modelling suggesting a significant rise in heat-attributable admissions by the end of this聽century聽if聽greenhouse gas聽emissions are not reduced.

Published in聽the聽Journal of聽the聽American Academy聽of聽Child聽&聽Adolescent Psychiatry,聽the study聽showed that increased risk was聽observed聽in both cold and warm seasons, but聽high temperatures聽in winter were associated with increased hospital admissions for聽mental聽health聽disorders among children and young adults, with聽rises in聽presentations for聽schizophrenia, eating disorders, and deliberate self-harm聽only聽observed聽in cold seasons. 聽

Overall, heat accounted for over聽eight聽percent of admissions in cold seasons and almost聽three聽percent in warmer seasons.听The risks during cold seasons were more pronounced for female patients and young adults.听

鈥淭his is聽a somewhat unexpected聽finding. Conventional wisdom would suggest the greatest impacts would be in聽summer, when聽it鈥檚聽the hottest.听Instead, it was聽hot winter weather that聽was associated with聽the聽highest聽risks聽of聽presentations,鈥 said聽lead聽author聽, an epidemiologist from the 爆料王鈥檚聽Faculty of Medicine and Health听补苍诲听Charles Perkins Centre.

Using聽hospital presentation data, the study聽also聽conducted scenario modelling, predicting聽that by the last decade of this聽century, heat-attributable admissions聽could聽rise by聽six聽percent under聽聽scenarios,聽almost聽eight聽percent聽under medium emission scenarios,听补苍诲听almost 21 percent聽under聽high emissions.

The findings come just聽as Australia experiences a hotter-than-normal聽lead up to winter, with聽many parts of Australia聽听补苍诲听.听

"Hotter-than-normal weather, which is becoming more frequent because of climate change, is already affecting the mental health of some of our most vulnerable young people,"聽said Dr He.听

"Our findings suggest these impacts are likely to grow as the climate continues to warm, making mental health an increasingly important consideration in climate adaptation and public health planning."

While聽the researchers聽didn't聽examine the biological mechanisms directly,聽they said聽there could be several plausible explanations.

"贰尘别谤驳颈苍驳听聽suggests heat can affect brain function and neural connectivity, with children and young people potentially more vulnerable because their brains are still developing."聽

"Another possibility is that our bodies are adapted to expect cold conditions in winter. When temperatures suddenly spike, people may overheat because they're using heavier bedding and clothing, and that can disrupt sleep and place additional stress on the body's ability to regulate temperature."

The聽researchers鈥櫬燾limate modelling is based on the聽聽(SSPs), which map climate change scenarios by greenhouse gas emissions. 聽
