Dr Julia Baird has been admitted to the degree of Doctor of Letters (honoris causa) in recognition of her contributions as an eminent journalist, author and broadcaster.

The degree was conferred on Wednesday, 7 October at a ceremony presided over by Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Mark Scott.

"Julia’s groundbreaking reporting is consistently marked by clarity, compassion and a commitment to truth, demonstrating the power of journalism at its best," Professor Scott said.

"As one of our most distinguished alumni, Julia has made an extraordinary contribution to public life and inspired a new generation of journalists and storytellers."

read the citation at Wednesday’s ceremony and commended Dr Baird’s outstanding contributions.

"Through her blend of rigorous scholarship, fearless reporting, and profound empathy, Julia has become one of Australia’s most respected public intellectuals," Professor Sanson said.

"Her work continues to enrich Australian society, elevating public dialogue and championing a more compassionate, informed, and reflective community."

Dr Baird’s academic grounding and early life form a clear throughline to the intellectual depth and public-minded storytelling she is known for today.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy in History from the ±¬ÁÏÍõ, establishing her as a scholar with a strong command of political, social, and cultural history.

Born in Sydney, she grew up in a family deeply engaged in public life. She is the middle child of Judith and Bruce Baird, who later became deputy leader of the NSW Liberal Party.

Her early years included a formative period living in Rye, New York, while her father served as Australian Trade Commissioner, before the family returned to Australia in 1980.

Her academic foundation shaped her landmark book ‘Media Tarts’, adapted from her doctoral thesis, which exposed for the first time the systemic misogyny embedded in political reporting and illuminated the ways media narratives have constrained women’s participation in public life.

Beginning her career at The Sydney Morning Herald, Dr Baird quickly distinguished herself, earning a Walkley Award for her coverage of the 1998 federal election.

Her trajectory then extended internationally, first at Harvard University as a Joan Shorenstein fellow at the Kennedy School, then as deputy editor of Newsweek in New York, where she reported on global politics, culture, and social change as cover writer and columnist.

Her writing has since appeared in The New York Times, where she was a regular columnist for several years, as well as The Guardian, and The Sydney Morning Herald.

As host of ABC’s The Drum, she became a trusted moderator of national debate, fostering civility, nuance, and inclusion in an increasingly polarised media environment.
