Flagship multidisciplinary centres

Our pioneering Multidisciplinary Initiatives (MDIs) are a break with tradition, an unfettering of discipline-based university research, that tackle the biggest challenges of the 21st century.

More than a decade ago we started bringing together researchers from different fields to work on major societal challenges, from chronic disease and mental health to emerging areas such as nanotechnology. They attracted significant external funding, encouraged new collaborations, and delivered tangible benefits to communities.

Now we're ready to take the next step: to shape the MDIs into mission-driven platforms that tackle complex global challenges like climate change and food security from multiple perspectives, and explore the links between them.

Our MDIs connect researchers, outside partners and communities to find lasting solutions that make an impact in the real world.
