1. Background

a. This scholarship was established in 2021, and is inspired by the University’s ‘One Sydney, Many People’ strategy. The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage and empower students to commence an undergraduate degree offered by the Faculty by promoting equal opportunity.

b. This scholarship is funded by the Faculty of Engineering.

2. Eligibility

a. The Scholarship is offered subject to the applicant qualifying for entry (admission) into an undergraduate program (including combined degrees) offered by the Faculty of Engineering at the ±¬ÁÏÍõ.

b. Applicants must either:

I. identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, 

II. be experiencing financial disadvantage, 

III. be from a regional or remote area of Australia, 

IV. or a combination of the above.

c. Recipients must enrol in an eligible degree in the semester immediately following award of this scholarship.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic merit based on the candidate’s performance in the NSW HSC or equivalent, 

II. and one or more of the following:

i. confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identity as defined in the ±¬ÁÏÍõ Confirmation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Identity Policy 2015,

ii. evidence of financial need and any other relevant hardship through information provided in the scholarship application form.

iii. evidence that the applicant’s residential address is inner regional, outer regional, remote, or very remote as classified by the Australian Statistical Geography Standard Remoteness Classification.

b. In line with the ±¬ÁÏÍõ’s One Sydney, Many People Strategy, preference will be given to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students, then to financially disadvantaged students, then to students from an inner regional, outer regional, remote or very remote area of Australia.

c. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Associate Dean (Education) of the Faculty of Engineering, or their nominated delegate.

4. Value

a. The Scholarship is valued at $15,000 per annum and is tenable for the full duration of the student’s candidature up to a maximum value of $60,000.

b. The Scholarship will be paid in two equal instalments after the census date of each semester. 

c. The value will be paid pro-rata based on enrolled units of study in the current semester less the enrolled units of study not successfully completed in the previous semester. For the purpose of this scholarship, $7,500 per semester is the value of 24 credit points. Payments will not exceed the maximum value of the scholarship.

d. Deferral and/or suspension of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of the Associate Dean (Education), Faculty of Engineering, or their nominee.

e. Transfer of the Scholarship to another stream or course within the Faculty of Engineering is only permitted, with prior approval from the Associate Dean (Education) of the Faculty of Engineering, or their nominated delegate. Funding will only be provided for the original awarded duration less the period of studies already undertaken.

f. The Scholarship is not transferable to another faculty or university.

g. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

h. No other amount is payable.

5. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,

II. defers or suspends their enrolment without prior approval from the Associate Dean (Education) of the Faculty of Engineering,

III. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,

IV. accepts an alternative primary scholarship, administered by the ±¬ÁÏÍõ, valued at $8,000 per annum or more for the same purpose as this scholarship,

V. accepts an alternative scholarship administered by the Faculty of Engineering or any School within the Faculty of Engineering, valued at $6,000 per annum or more for the same purpose as this scholarship. The exception to this is where the recipuient is awarded a placement scholarship, in which case this scholarship will be suspended for the duration of the placement. It will be reinstated at the completion of the placement if there is any scholarship candidature remaining. The value of this scholarship for the period of the placement will be forfeited,

VI. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.

6. Other Requirements

a. Recipients will be required to submit a testimonial to the Faculty of Engineering on the impact of this scholarship, for marketing purposes.
