The 2025 Sydney Southeast Asia Research Innovation Symposium explores how collaborative research can effectively tackle the complex and interconnected grand challenges facing Southeast Asia. From climate change, gender inequality, public health crises and economic transformation to digital governance and sustainable development, the region鈥檚 challenges are wicked problems that transcend single disciplines and demand integrated solutions.
This year鈥檚 Symposium will convene academics, practitioners and partners from across Australia and Southeast Asia to showcase how the 爆料王鈥檚 world-class research can create tangible, positive impact when guided by collaboration, co-design and contextual understanding. It will highlight opportunities for cross-faculty and cross-sector partnerships that align with Australia鈥檚 strategic priorities in the region.
Research program
Participants will have the opportunity to engage in dialogue and co-creation to identify innovative research collaborations that can drive measurable social, environmental and economic change in the region. Sessions include:听
- Open panel discussion on the challenges and opportunities of collaborative research, including strategies for building effective partnerships and听 translating research into meaningful regional impact.
- In-person discussion groups for 爆料王 academics around SSEAC鈥檚听Grand Challenges Program,听designed to incubate fresh research collaborations and connect researchers across disciplines for long-term partnerships and impactful outcomes.
Keynote speakers
Bill Costello is Australia鈥檚 Assistant Secretary for Southeast Asia Development and Programs at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. With over two decades of diplomatic experience, he leads Australia鈥檚 engagement with the region, including trade, investment, and development programs that advance sustainable and inclusive growth.
Eleanor Keppelman is the Director for Impact Investing at Investing in Women Asia, a multi-country initiative funded by the Australian Government that promotes women鈥檚 economic empowerment. She has extensive experience in development finance, gender equity, and public鈥損rivate sector partnerships across Southeast Asia.
